He was born on the 10th March, at 3 o’clock in the morning, on the feast day of St. Melito, at No. 21, Calle San Nicolás, Pamplona. He was christened that same day in the Parish Church of San Nicolás by Francisco Giménez, Chaplain of the First Battalion of Spain’s 30th Regiment.

His father was Major Miguel Sarasate Juanena, from Pamplona, musician, soldier and conductor of the 30th Regiment Band, and his mother was Francisca Javiera Navascués Oarriechena, from Orbaiceta. He had three sisters: Micaela, Francisca and María.

His grandparents on his father’s side were Martín Sarasate, from Larráyoz, the violinist’s godfather, and María Juanena, from Sarasa; and on his mother’s side, Francisco Navascués, from Urdániz, and Micaela Oarriechena, from Maya.
