Abstract

High blood pressure is one of the principal causes of morbi-mortality and at present there is enough clinical evidence to be able to ensure that an adequate treatment can radically change its natural history, that is: reduction of cerebral vascular accidents, coronary events, etc.

The benefits of a correct treatment extends from young people with hypertension to the elderly. Nonetheless, in order to obtain optimum results hypertension should not be considered as an anomalous figure, but as part of an ensemble with other factors -lifestyle, visceral repercussion, etc.- that will help to establish the magnitude of the problem and thus to design an efficient therapeutic strategy.

The treatment of hypertension should always start with the analysis of abnormal lifestyles, and correction by means of non-pharmacological interventions: treatment of obesity, change of dietary habits, etc. Pharmacological treatment should always consider the possible presence of concomitant illnesses with the aim of employing a hypertensive drug that will not make these worse, and with the hypertense elderly population a special watch should be kept out for this factor as well as pharmacological secondary effects.

Key words: High blood pressure. Pharmacological treatment. Antihypertensive drugs.
