Abstract

The attempt has been made in numerous studies to relate infection by Helicobacter pylori with gastro-oesophageal reflux disease. In the light of the data presently avaible, wihich is principally epidemiological, it seems improbable that H pylori should be the cause of gastro-oesophageal reflux. Nervertheless, interest has arisen concerning the possibility that the eradication of H pylori might be related to the appearance, or worsening, of gastro-oesophageal reflux, although objetive data that would support this assertion is not available to us. What does appear to be of importance is the fact that the combination of treatment with omeprazol together with infection by H pylori gives rise to a greater risk of atrophic gastritis, one of the risk factors of gastric cnacer. We present a review of the relationship between H pylori and gastro-oesophageal reflux disease.

Key words: Helicobacter pylori. Gastro-oesophageal reflux.
